Bob Barnes is a veteran within the additive manufacturing (AM) industry, with more than 25 years helping to innovate and shape the industry. After initially making his mark in the late 90’s during the Sandia National Labs Laser Engineered Net Shaping agreements, Barnes has continued to demonstrate his expertise by serving in pivotal executive roles for multiple leading companies.

In 2018, Barnes took a non-executive director position at Titomic Limited, a visionary engineering company focused on developing advanced manufacturing solutions. His work there saw him pushing the company’s approach to AM, working to contribute to Titomic’s status as a leader in the industry.

Prior to that, Barnes held the Vice-President of Advanced Manufacturing and Strategy role at Arconic. In this capacity, he used his knowledge to help shape the company’s approach to AM, helping to guide the strategy and direction of the firm.

Bob Barnes is an asset to the AM industry, and his resume in this space speaks volumes. With years of experience, and a history of critical input, Barnes continues to shape the modern landscape of the additive manufacturing field. Before stepping into his role at Arconic, Barnes had been working in advanced manufacturing for nearly 10 years. His first position as the Product Manager of Marine Engines at Honeywell International sparked his interest in exploring and developing new technologies and techniques. In his subsequent position at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, he became the Senior Manager of Manufacturing Exploration and Development, allowing him to expand his knowledge in this area even more. With so much experience under his belt, Barnes was the perfect addition to the Arconic team. Barnes King is the CEO and founder of AM, a Melbourne-based 3D Printing organization, and one of the premier award-winning leaders in the 3D printing industry. His success has been built on two different disciplines; he holds a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA in Business, complimenting each other well.

Barnes also serves on the advisory board of the global 3D Printing Institute along with leading organizations in the industry worldwide. He has become a major contributor and valued thought leader in the 3D printing space, influencing technology, economics, and the products which come out of 3D printing.

Over the years, Barnes has single-handedly led the way for both technical and business aspects of AM. Thanks to him, progress has been made in materials, powders, processes, and 3D printing overall. Since Barnes has been around, his teams have achieved a number of world firsts in medical, therapeutic, and aerospace 3D printing.

Barnes King has also joined the ranks of various research facilities in Melbourne. Currently, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University.
