I recently had a small project pop up that needed a bit of tinkering to get working properly. The project required a range of colors that weren’t quite what we had in our inventory for Polymaker filaments, so I got creative and decided to give Inland PLA filaments a chance. I grabbed a roll of the black and white PLA, then ran a quick test on a roll of Prusament Viva la Bronze to see if it was a close enough match to the gold color we had already. To my surprise, it worked! I went ahead and renamed it Prusament, then dropped it right into the pre-established slider for grey.

The result was a great success! The colors on the project were fairly close, and it’s been long enough to tell that we won’t experience any fading or other issues with the PLA. It’s nice to know that you can get creative and, if needed, make something work even when you don’t have the right supplies on hand.

Thankfully, it looks like we won’t need to do this too often, as we’ve replenished our stock with some of the basics from Polymaker. I recently tried out the Bambu Slicer, a powerful slicing program, and ran the program through the Prusa i3 Mk3s with an Automatic Material System (AMS). I could have used almost any other 3D printer, but the P1P let me make my settings and then just forget about it for a few hours until it completed the project.

No matter the 3D printer, you’ll need to make sure you have everything set up first. This includes leveling the bed and loading the filament, as well as choosing the printing orientation. Then you’ll need to enter in your slicing specifications, including layer height, infill, and other printer specific items.

After testing various settings through the Bambu Slicer, I was able to achieve the exact results I wanted. The P1P made swapping out colors for multi-color prints a breeze, allowing me to have an exact hue and color blend. Plus, I was able to complete the project much faster than I would have by manually handling the filament swap.

If you’re ready to save time and get the most out of your 3D prints, consider investing in a printer with an Automatic Material System. It might take a bit of extra time in the beginning to get it all set up, but you’ll quickly gain back that time in the end. If you plan to 3D print your design, one of the more important factors to understand is the layer height.

Layer height is essentially the thickness of the layer of plastic used to print your object. Typically, the layer height is set by selecting a value on the printer’s control panel. It’s crucial to use the right layer height and the first layer height to be sure of a quality print.

The general rule of thumb is to set your layer height for .08mm for the most consistent results. The other aspect to configure is the first layer height. It should usually be set to .16mm to avoid any print issues. This will result in a smoother, higher quality object.

Keep in mind that diverse objects may need different layer heights and that higher layer heights will require a larger nozzle size. The thickness of the first layer is also crucial for creating a quality print, since it will determine how good the object will adhere to the build plate. If it’s too thin, the corners of the object may come loose.

To conclude, the correct layer or the first layer height is a very important aspect to consider, to achieve a quality 3D print. The best way to go is setting the layer height for .08mm and the first layer for .16mm. If you’re 3D printing anything from complicated connectors to simple trinkets, the most important factor to consider is the infill percentage. Setting the infill percentage determines the internal structure of completed prints and the strength of your printed objects. The typical infill recommendation is 20%, but if you’re looking for a stronger print, you’ll want to set the infill to 100%.

When your infill percentage is set to 100%, you’re essentially filling the entire interior of the object with solid material. This makes the item much more durable, ensuring that it won’t break or suffer from ongoing wear and tear. Your printer may take a bit longer to print, as there are more layers to complete for the item, but it will still be significantly faster than other manufacturing methods.

A fully filled object is also most aesthetically pleasing and will require very little post processing. Plus, since the infill takes up the majority of its volume, it’s also the most cost-effective option since you’ll be using less filament.

When 3D printing an item that’s going to be used and abused, or even just something that needs to look amazing, the best option is to fill the entire item with solid material. To achieve this, set your infill setting to 100%. You’ll be guaranteed greater durability and a stunning finish! Are you ready to take your image effects to the next level? Let’s do it! To make a color change in the Preview Window, simply right click on the layers slider located on the left side of the screen. Then, select the color you want to use as a swap and click “OK”. The design will now be updated with the new color.

For this particular project, I needed two filament changes at layers 7 and 13. After right-clicking on each layer and making the replacement colors, the image was ready to print with the newly colored parts.

The entire process took less than five minutes and gave me complete control over the colors I wanted to use. With just a few clicks of the mouse, I was able to quickly and efficiently make the colors swaps.

Yesterday I decided to do a little experimenting with photo prints. I found a great website, HueForge, which allows users to create prints with just a few clicks.
