It’s been three years since my family and I said goodbye to Ashland, Oregon. We had lived there for a long time and our two sons were born there, yet it was time to go. Wildfires had been growing increasingly out of control, so we had an emergency kit at the door, ready in case we had to flee in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, the Alameda fire came and destroyed two towns next to ours, Talent and Phoenix, and we knew we had to leave for the Midwest.

The decision to uproot our lives and travel across the country wasn’t easy. We had deep roots in beautiful Ashland and we had to leave behind valued friends and our jobs (which were hard to replicate midwestern small towns). But the thought of another scorching summer with the threat of being completely wiped out was even harder to bear.

It has not been easy since we’ve been here, but we are rebuilding our lives and our new community has opened its arms to us. I no longer wake up at night to check the news for updates on the latest wildfire. My wife and I once again feel secure in our home and our environment. Leaving Ashland was a hard decision but it was one that was the best for our family. An August evening in 1991, as they sky lit up in an orange hue, the sound of fire was ever-present. The worst of the inferno had already wreathed the area in its destructive wake. Around 2,600 homes were reduced to rubble, ash and debris. Walking through the once vibrant and popular countryside we were overcome with a sense of regret and grief. Where stands of homes and streets full of life once lived, there are now only charred remains of what was. It’s a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life. An alarming trend is spreading across the US — the frequency and destructive power of wildfires has been increasing year after year. While scientists work to find solutions to global warming, families are dealing with the immediate aftermath and trying to rebuild their homes. But with no end in sight, these communities face a very difficult task.

The situation is especially dire in the western US, with some of the most devastating disasters occurring in California. In 2018, the Camp Fire killed 85 people, making it the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history. Experts have also linked many of these fires with climate change, as higher temperatures and less rainfall mean dryer vegetation for the fires to feed on.

Unfortunately, the pattern doesn’t look to be changing anytime soon. Until drastic measures are taken to reduce global temperatures, these wildfires will continue to grow in intensity. Hundreds of families have already been displaced from their homes, stuck in FEMA trailers and hotel rooms until they can find a way to return to their lives.

The government needs to act now and commit more resources into mitigating the effects of climate change. In the meantime, affected communities must be given the necessary support and assistance to help them rebuild. It’s a sad and terrifying situation, but with the right combination of urgency and determination, it’s a challenge we can overcome. The Thalden Foundation has just unveiled a brand-new, $3 million project – the New Spirit Village. Kathryn Thalden has reported to 3DPrint.com that the roads for the properties have already been laid, with 3D printing beginning soon after.
