3D printing is rapidly gaining popularity in the construction industry, and Australia is no exception. In Dubbo, a city in New South Wales, the regional council has recently announced that they will be using 3D printing technology to build a new amenities block in Macquarie Lions Park West. This groundbreaking project is being carried out by Contour3D, an Australian company that specializes in 3D printing construction.

The amenities block, which is expected to open in August this year, will cover an area of 148 square meters. It will be constructed using 25 tonnes of Contour3D’s own material called Countourcrete. This specially-designed concrete contains 40% recycled materials, making it a more sustainable option. In fact, sustainability is a key focus for Contour3D, as they are dedicated to creating affordable housing solutions that are also environmentally friendly.

This is not the first large-scale 3D printing construction project for Contour3D. They have previously been involved in the construction of a 3D printed holiday park in Dubbo. With this latest project, the company aims to improve accessibility and increase the number of toilets in Lions Park, all while keeping environmental concerns and costs in mind.

According to Ian Whipple, Manager of Major Projects at Dubbo Regional Council, the amenities block will be constructed using high strength concrete with lower environmental impacts and wastage compared to traditional construction methods. Local news reports that the project will not only be larger than the previous block, but also $178,000 AUD cheaper.

So, what can we expect from this 3D printed amenities block? The structure will be approximately 148 square meters in size, with dimensions of 18.5m x 8m. It will be made out of Countourcrete, a material that combines the strength of concrete with the sustainability of recycled materials. Contour3D is constantly working to improve Countourcrete in collaboration with the University of New South Wales, ensuring that it can withstand the harsh Australian climate and remain strong and durable for over 100 years.

Construction of the amenities block began on July 10th using Contour3D’s Opus One 3D printer. The process is expected to take only 25 hours, although the completion date has not yet been confirmed. Contour3D is responsible for the structural components of the building, including the walls, internal structure, and roof. The internal fittings will be completed prior to the reopening of the block.

One of the advantages of 3D printing construction is the minimal waste generated during the process. Additionally, the material used for the block has an oxide color already added, eliminating the need for painting and saving time.

Mayor Mathew Dickerson of Dubbo Regional Council expressed his excitement about using 3D printing technology for the first time, stating that if the trial is successful, the council will explore further opportunities to utilize this innovative construction method. He believes that this project has the potential to revolutionize the way infrastructure and housing are built, and Dubbo Regional Council is leading the way in Australia by being the first council to embrace this technology.
