Tuan TranPham is an industry veteran in the world of 3D printing. He has been working in the field for over 20 years and has had experience with big players like Stratasys and 3D Systems, as well as startups like Desktop Metal, Arevo, and Azul 3D. With over 33,000 followers on LinkedIn, Tuan is the most followed person in the additive manufacturing (AM) industry.

But Tuan’s journey in the industry is just one part of his fascinating life story. Born in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, Tuan and his family had to flee their homeland by boat in 1979 due to the border dispute with China. They spent three days on the boat and eventually ended up in a United Nations refugee camp in Denmark. After six months in the camp, Tuan’s family found permanent residence in Copenhagen.

It’s a little-known fact that Tuan is actually a Vietnamese boat refugee. He finds it funny that his boss at Arevo, a carbon fiber 3D printing startup, was also in the same refugee camp at the same time. They may have even met back then, but Tuan was only five years old at the time.

In Denmark, military conscription is mandatory, so Tuan had to serve in the military. He completed a major in business and engineering and then participated in the EU student exchange program, living in Manchester for a year. In 1999, while still studying, Tuan decided to work for a Danish company as an intern in Hanoi, Vietnam. His language skills allowed him to take on more responsibilities, and he worked at a small Cisco reseller that was later acquired by GIGA A/S, a manufacturer of networking chips. This acquisition was the most valuable in Danish history, with a price tag of $1.25 billion in cash.

Working at GIGA A/S led Tuan to Intel, where he eventually had the opportunity to move to the U.S. in 2002. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, where he has lived ever since, with the exception of two years in Hong Kong. Tuan moved to Boston for a woman, who would become his wife, but it was also through that relocation that he discovered his “accidental passion” for 3D printing.

Tuan’s introduction to 3D printing came through a friend of a friend who was the financial controller at Z Corp. They were looking for someone with knowledge of Asia Pacific, and Tuan’s previous experience with Intel made him a perfect fit. He joined Z Corp at the age of 29 and fell in love with the technology. He saw its potential and knew that it was going to be a big industry.

Throughout his career, Tuan has been in the right place at the right time. He navigated the world of 3D printing during its most tumultuous times. He started at Z Corp, who licensed MIT’s binder jetting technology for 3D printing full-color objects made from gypsum powder. Later, he joined 3D Systems when they acquired Z Corp. Tuan then moved on to Objet, an experience that impressed him greatly.

Tuan’s journey in the 3D printing industry has been eventful and full of ups and downs. He has worked with industry leaders, witnessed major acquisitions, and experienced the rapid evolution of the technology. Today, he is a respected figure in the AM industry, sharing his knowledge and insights with a vast community of followers on LinkedIn.

Tuan’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and being at the right place at the right time. It is a reminder that life can take unexpected turns, leading us to paths we never imagined. Tuan’s passion for 3D printing and his dedication to the industry have made him a true veteran and an influential figure in the AM sector.

Transforming the Traditional Blog Post: Embracing the Power of Social Media

In today’s digital age, social media has become an influential platform for individuals to share their thoughts, ideas, and even build professional networks. One person who has truly harnessed the power of social media in his career is Tuan TranPham, former Chief Revenue Officer for Azul 3D. TranPham’s journey highlights the significant impact that social media, particularly LinkedIn, can have on one’s professional life.

TranPham’s foray into the world of social media began in 2007 when he joined LinkedIn. At that time, 3D printing was still in its nascent stage as a production tool. TranPham recognized the potential of this emerging technology and saw LinkedIn as a powerful platform to connect with like-minded individuals and expand his professional reach. With only 12 million users on the global platform, TranPham saw an opportunity to leverage this network to his advantage.

“I thought, this is a great platform because basically you have a global deck of millions of resumes, and it’s going to be so powerful because what touches us all is having a job to feed your family, right?” TranPham said. He saw LinkedIn as a platform that could not only help him find potential job opportunities but also establish himself as an industry expert.

TranPham understood that simply having a presence on social media was not enough; he needed to create value amidst the noise. To achieve this, he decided to share positive content, inspiring 3D printing sights, and his own insights. He also recognized the importance of giving credit to individuals in the industry, thus boosting them along the way.

Through his strategic approach, TranPham began building a following and generating interest from influential individuals in the field. It was through LinkedIn that he caught the attention of Magnus René, the former CEO of Arcam, a pioneer in electron beam melting (EBM) technology. René was intrigued by TranPham’s market insights and contacts, which challenged the data provided by others in the industry.

TranPham’s journey continued as he joined Arcam and delved deeper into the world of metal 3D printing technologies. He used LinkedIn to share the knowledge he gained, contributing to the collective understanding of 3D printing. The platform also provided him with valuable feedback from the community, enhancing his own understanding of the technology.

“What people don’t realize is that you learn just as much by sharing… I found that by sharing some insight, you actually get good feedback that will make you better,” TranPham emphasized. He encourages others to embrace social media as a tool for learning, growth, and professional development.

TranPham’s story exemplifies the power of social media, specifically LinkedIn, in shaping one’s career trajectory. By leveraging this platform, he not only landed job opportunities but also established himself as a thought leader in the field. His journey serves as a testament to the immense possibilities that social media offers in today’s interconnected world.

So, the next time you’re browsing through social media, remember TranPham’s wise words: “You don’t know where your next prospect could be, but if you have enough voice and act as a lighthouse, the right people will come to you.” Embrace social media, add value to the noise, and let the opportunities unfold.
