Protolabs Expands with New 3D Printing Facility in Raleigh

In an exciting development, Protolabs, a well-known manufacturing service, has announced a significant expansion plan. The company, which specializes in utilizing 3D printing, has seen substantial growth in recent years, particularly after acquiring 3D Hubs. With this expansion, Protolabs aims to solidify its position as one of the nation’s largest 3D printing providers.

Protolabs has experienced a 25% increase in demand for its Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) services, which has necessitated the need for a new facility. The company has chosen Raleigh, NC as the location for its expansion, with a spacious area of 120,000 square feet dedicated to installing 3D printers. The facility will be able to accommodate up to 91 3D printers of varying sizes and will have a dedicated staff of 75 for DMLS operations.

Scheduled to open on October 6th, the new facility is expected to handle a diverse range of industrial applications, including aerospace, healthcare, and specialized manufacturing tools. Protolabs aims to ensure the highest quality standards for its customers by designing the facility to segregate operations and prevent contamination. For instance, all volatile and non-volatile metal powder activities will be completely separated. This meticulous approach gives Protolabs’ customers added assurance regarding the quality of their parts.

Recognizing the importance of post-processing in metal 3D printing, Protolabs has also made provisions for secondary machining capabilities within the new facility. Post-processing involves detaching metal supports, removing the print from the plate, surface smoothing, applying heat treatments, and various other steps. By accommodating all these requirements, Protolabs streamlines the production process and delivers finished parts to customers efficiently.

Furthermore, the expansion includes an expanded metrology capability for enhanced quality control. This addition ensures that each printed part meets the highest standards of accuracy and reliability.

This significant expansion represents a strategic move for Protolabs and reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to the growth and success of its DMLS 3D printing business. The decision to invest in a large and state-of-the-art facility demonstrates Protolabs’ confidence in the future of the industry and its ability to meet the evolving demands of its customers.

Protolabs’ expansion marks an important milestone in the world of 3D printing and highlights the relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence within the manufacturing industry. With the opening of their new facility, Protolabs is poised to continue its ascent as a leader in the 3D printing space.
