The Evolution of 3D Printed Footwear: Introducing the ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL

3D printed shoes have taken the fashion world by storm, captivating major brands and startups alike. These innovative creations have revolutionized the footwear industry, allowing for endless possibilities and showcasing a range of unique designs. From traditional boots to sneakers that can actually seed plants, 3D printed footwear has become a medium for unparalleled creativity, even making its way onto the runways of Paris Fashion Week.

One of the latest additions to this revolutionary trend is the ASICS ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL. Released on August 1st, this sandal is part of a collaboration between global sportswear giant ASICS and LuxCreo, a California-based 3D printing company. ASICS and LuxCreo have previously partnered on projects such as 3D printed flip-flops and the previous version of the fully 3D-printed ACTIBREEZE™ sandal. LuxCreo has established itself as a forerunner in the 3D printing industry, offering end-to-end solutions focused on AI-enabled software and advanced designs. For the production of the ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL, the partners utilized LuxCreo’s Smart Factory Production service.

“Our collaboration with ASICS is a testament to the forward-thinking ethos that drives our companies. By bringing a consumer hybrid 3D printed footwear product to market, we are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and forging a partnership that thrives on innovation and excellence,” explained Michael Strohecker, Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer of LuxCreo. “Together, we are pushing possibilities in footwear.“

The ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL is crafted using an elastomer material and features a 3D printed footbed. LuxCreo’s elastomer material is highly elastic and meets the AFIRM RSL standard. These qualities are showcased in the lattice-like structure of the insole, providing enhanced comfort and breathability. The design of the sandal has been modified from the previous model to offer additional benefits to the wearer. One notable addition is a central strap that keeps the insole in place, providing better foot support and aiding in recovery before the next sports session. This sandal is designed for sports enthusiasts aiming to elevate their performance.

According to a press release, ASICS bases every new product design on data from tests, user experiences, and studies. Over the span of 30 years, the ASICS Institute of Sport Science has scanned and documented the feet of over 1 million individuals. They have incorporated the findings from more than 100,000 biomechanical tests into the design of the ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL.

Chris Ekman, Senior Manager of Global Product Line Footwear at ASICS, emphasizes the significance of rigorous testing in the product design process: “At ASICS, we know that if our aim is to help everyone achieve a sound mind in a sound body, our products must go beyond being trusted partners for the runs and races themselves. We are also committed to exploring the moments of before performance and after performance too, as these phases are crucial to perform at your peak when it matters and protect against injury. That’s why we are so excited to be launching the ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL today, delivering plush comfort and relaxation when runners need it most in those all-important periods of rest and recovery.”

By optimizing recovery time, athletes can better prepare for their next competition, run, or workout, ultimately leading to improved performance, enhanced fitness, and overall well-being. ASICS stays true to its motto, which is also reflected in the acronym of the brand name: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, which translates to “A healthy mind resides in a healthy body.”

The ACTIBREEZE™ HYBRID SANDAL represents the continuing evolution of 3D printed footwear, combining comfort, performance, and style. Its 3D printed lattice insole provides breathability, ensuring maximum ease for the wearer. This groundbreaking sandal marks another milestone in the realm of 3D printed fashion.
