The Key to Successful Search-and-Rescue Operations: 3D Printed Robots

When it comes to search-and-rescue operations, time is of the essence. Quick response and specialized efforts are crucial for maximizing the chances of saving lives in a crisis. However, achieving this can be quite challenging. Thanks to Markus Nemitz, a researcher at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), there may now be a solution.

Nemitz has received a $599,815 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation to develop small and flexible, 3D printed robots that can traverse challenging terrains. These robots are designed to swim, crawl, climb, and dive through hostile and confined spaces, making them ideal for search-and-rescue operations.

Nemitz’s inspiration for this project stemmed from the Tham Luang cave crisis that took place in Thailand in 2018. During this incident, 12 members of a youth soccer camp and their coach were trapped deep in the Tham Luang cave system due to heavy rainfall and flooding. The rescue efforts were hindered by strong currents and rising water levels, making it difficult to locate and rescue the group. Eventually, an international team consisting of 100 divers and 10,000 people managed to rescue all 13 members.

This incident highlighted the need for innovative approaches in search-and-rescue operations. Nemitz aims to develop 3D printed robots with integrated fluidic circuits that can be rapidly produced and deployed in disasters like the Tham Luang cave crisis. He plans to test miniaturized models of these robots in replicated parts of the Thai cave during the five-year project.

The purpose of these robots is to explore areas that are hazardous or inaccessible to humans, such as earthquake debris, flooded regions, and even nuclear accident sites. Nemitz believes that the development of small robots made from soft, flexible materials holds immense potential for aiding rescue efforts in disasters.

To achieve this, Nemitz is drawing upon his experience in the field of soft robotics, which is increasingly influenced by 3D printing. He aims to advance the fields of soft robotics and printable robotics by developing new principles for robot design and fabrication. Specifically, he focuses on integrating electronic circuits with 3D printed fluidic circuits, which are more resilient to mechanical damage and electromagnetic interference compared to traditional electronics.

Nemitz plans to use commercial 3D printers and elastomeric filaments to ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of these 3D printed robots. The robots’ performance will be assessed by testing their ability to reach designated targets in a lab-based model cave system.

The potential applications for these robots extend beyond search-and-rescue operations. They could be used in space exploration, climate monitoring, and inspection operations in hostile environments. By equipping these robots with sensors such as microphones and cameras, their capabilities can be further enhanced, especially during natural disasters.

According to Nemitz, “Robots can go to places beyond human reach. These robots will enhance the capabilities of rescuers and ensure a dynamic and rapid response to emergencies. Continuous innovation and the development of new technologies are essential in this field, and robotics is at the forefront of this development.”

These robots have the potential to save lives by venturing into dangerous and inaccessible areas where humans cannot go.
