India Leads the Way in 3D Printed Construction
India is quickly becoming a leader in the field of additive construction (AC), with the recent inauguration of its first-ever 3D printed post office in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This landmark project was completed in just 44 days and cost a fraction of traditional construction methods.
The post office, which was announced in September 2022 and officially began construction in March 2023, opened its doors for business on August 18. The building, estimated to cost 2.6 million rupees (USD$31,200), showcases the impressive speed and cost-effectiveness of 3D printing technology compared to traditional construction techniques.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, inaugurated the post office and praised India’s progress and development. He emphasized the country’s commitment to developing its own technology and hailed the leadership’s confidence in the capabilities of the Indian people.
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, also lauded the achievement, noting that the 3D printed post office symbolizes India’s progress in innovation and self-reliance. He commended the individuals who dedicated their efforts to bring this project to fruition.
The construction of the three-story, 1,100-square-foot post office was carried out by L&T Construction, a company that has been involved in 3D printing research since 2016. L&T, a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), utilized technology from Danish firm COBOD to execute the project. This successful collaboration highlights the growth of both 3D printing and AC in India, as well as the increasing prominence of COBOD in the global market.
India’s adoption of additive manufacturing has seen significant growth in recent years, attracting investments from Western companies such as Siemens, Schneider Electric, Ultimaker, HP, Meltio, and AddUp. With India’s status as the fastest-growing economy, it is anticipated that the country’s adoption of 3D printing will continue to accelerate, following similar trends observed in other regions.
As India embraces AC and explores new frontiers, including 3D printing for space utilization, the country is proving to be at the forefront of technological advancements. The rapid emergence of niche sectors like AC and 3D printing reflects India’s commitment to innovation and its ability to adapt quickly to new technologies.
