Why 3D Scanning is Revolutionizing the Automotive Industry

The project involved enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of a BMW M240i and a BMW G80 by adding a splitter lip to the front bumper.

The first step in this complex process was capturing the geometry of the existing bumper so that it could serve as the base for the attachment’s 3D model. This is where 3D scanning technology comes into play. The team used Thor 3D’s Calibry 3D scanner, which is known for its accuracy and efficiency. In just 40 minutes, the scan was complete, and there was no need for any tracking markers.

To ensure the best results, the techs applied a special spray to the bumper prior to scanning. This created a non-reflective surface, making it easier for the scanner to capture the geometry accurately. Reflective surfaces can often confuse 3D scanners, but this simple trick helped overcome that challenge.

Since the bumper is a large component, it had to be captured in several segments. However, with the help of the Calibry Nest software, which seamlessly stitches together the different segments, the techs were able to create a comprehensive 3D model of the bumper.

With the 3D scan serving as a reference, the team then adjusted the 3D models of the various versions of the splitter lip. Each version was 3D printed and fitted to the automobile. Thanks to the precision of the 3D scan, the fit was always perfect, saving time and eliminating the need for trial and error.

Once the design was finalized, the splitter lip was produced using lightweight carbon fiber material. This material is known for its strength and durability, making it the ideal choice for automotive applications.

This project is just one example of how the combination of 3D scanning, 3D printing, and advanced software is revolutionizing the automotive industry.
