Cybe, a Netherlands-based company, has made a groundbreaking announcement in the field of construction 3D printing. They have introduced a new printing material that is not only nearly carbon neutral but also significantly changes the game in this industry.

Construction 3D printing has been gaining momentum in recent years, with many companies utilizing concrete extrusion to build large structures such as buildings. While this method allows for quick printing of concrete portions of the buildings, it is still an expensive process. The main reason for this is that normal concrete takes a long time to set, and construction 3D printing requires a material that sets quickly to enable the printing of new layers.

To meet this requirement, most construction 3D printers have had to use costly concrete mixes specially designed to cure rapidly. In fact, concrete production is responsible for around eight percent of annual CO2 emissions.

Cybe had already developed a special concrete mortar mix that reduced CO2 emissions by 32%. However, they have now partnered with Hive3D Builders to create a new geopolymer cement material that reduces CO2 emissions by a staggering 93%. This new material is not only stronger than traditional cement but is also priced at about one-third of typical 3D print cements.

This development is significant for construction 3D printing as it not only reduces emissions but also lowers costs. This will make project proposals more attractive by offering lower prices and thus attracting more buyers to adopt this technology. Additionally, as more projects aim to meet specific CO2 reduction goals, Cybe’s new material could play a crucial role in achieving these targets, irrespective of the cost involved.
