Australia’s iLAuNCH (Innovative Launch, Automation, Novel Materials, Communications, and Hypersonics) initiative is a groundbreaking effort to revolutionize space technology. The iLAuNCH facility in Camden Park, strategically located near Adelaide’s space sector businesses, will be at the forefront of rapid 3D metal printing for space structures. The program is a collaboration between the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia (UniSA) and Adelaide’s industrial machinery manufacturer VPG Innovation. The project aims to establish manufacturing design best practices and harness the most effective ways to leverage this technology. To prepare for the project, engineers Alex Baricz and James Mathison underwent intensive training at GE Additive in Sweden. They acquired the practical skills needed to operate and maintain the Arcam electron beam metal 3D printer, a technology owned by GE Additive that will play a crucial role in the iLAuNCH program.

iLAuNCH is part of the Australian Government’s vision to strengthen research capabilities, foster industry engagement, and drive commercial outcomes. As part of the Department of Education’s Trailblazer Universities Program, the project aims to bridge existing gaps and accelerate the development of a space manufacturing sector. It will receive $50 million of investment over four years through this federal program, along with an additional $130 million from the University of Southern Queensland, the Australian National University, and UniSA. Industry partners and Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), are also supporting the initiative. The expected net economic benefit of the $180 million investment is $3.6 billion by 2040.
