Additive manufacturing is becoming more and more prevalent in many different sectors, whether in aerospace, medicine or the food industry. This is mainly due to the benefits it offers in all of them. What makes it special is, above all, its freedom of design. With 3D printing, it is possible to create complex structures efficiently and even more sustainably and with fewer resources than with conventional methods. Indeed, this is what pushed German company Recozy to turn towards the technology, as it focuses primarily on transparency and sustainability in its process of designing furniture and home decor. We spoke with their team to learn more about their technology, their future projects and the use of 3D printing in interior design.

3DN: Can you tell us more about Recozy?

Recozy is a tech-savvy design brand that focuses on resource-efficient production of recyclable furniture, home accessories and lighting and promotes conscious consumption through transparency. Our team consists of seven people in total, made up of enthusiasts from various fields such as technology, design, sustainability and sales. Over the past three years, we have acquired extensive knowledge of additive manufacturing. With this experience, wide-ranging expertise and great enthusiasm for 3D printing, we offer our customers high-quality design objects in the interior and furniture sector. These are not only characterized by their special look and 3D printing, but are also made from predominantly recycled materials.

3DN: How did the idea for Recozy come about?

We have been deeply involved with technological processes since the conclusion of 2019. The concept for Recozy took root in the basement of one of our founders in the early days of 2021. With the help of family networks, we’ve honed in on the furniture industry, viewing the production method and its potential environmental impacts as extremely logical. Our mission is to make a significant contribution to shaping the industry in an eco-friendly manner, with additive manufacturing paving the way.

The comprehensive nature of this manufacturing method truly impressed us. From decentralized manufacturing and energy and resource efficiency to the concept of open source, 3D printing delivers manifold benefits. Moreover, additive manufacturing opens the door to unlimited application possibilities, enabling us to envision a future where this technology is commonplace and reshapes multiple industries.

A number of factors influenced our decision to adopt additive manufacturing for production at Recozy. Primarily, 3D printing provides considerable flexibility and customization opportunities in the design process and production. Furthermore, each product can carry a distinct design language, showcasing unique shapes, high levels of detail, and a unique touch. This production method also allows us to cater to the individual and environmentally-conscious needs and desires of our clients. Other critical factors include local, energy-efficient, and resource-saving production. The promising future of the industry draws us in too. Watching the innovative drive of additive manufacturing as it gains prominence and finds a foothold is remarkably invigorating. We are motivated to participate in this ongoing development.

3DN: Sustainability is a crucial theme for you. How do you put this into practice?

We consistently apply our foundational eco-friendly principles via additive manufacturing, using recycled resources, creating short supply chains, and ensuring the longevity of all our products. Our production exclusively takes place at our Lower Saxony factory, and we integrate the idea of circular product design in everything we make. During product development, our mindset transcends the linear lifecycle, taking into account all stages from choosing materials, production, usage, to recycling within our design process. We perceive green consciousness as a basic norm that should pervade all aspects of people’s routines. Towards this objective, we are striving to increase transparency and raise customer awareness about the ecological implications of their buying decisions.

Contrary to common thought, plastic waste is considerably valuable, not useless. The goal should not be generating more petroleum-based materials but recycling those already available and turning to new forms of organic plastic variants. With endless enthusiasm, we perpetually hunt for ways to refine our production procedures. Furthermore, both our business and every single product favours climate neutrality. We compensate for emissions we currently cannot avoid through specific climate conservation initiatives.

3DN: What can be expected from Recozy in the foreseeable future?

Presently, we are gearing up to launch two new production lines for our range of furniture and interiors. While we aim to diversify our offerings, we also realize the growing significance of contract manufacturing. We have accomplished considerable ground in this respect through collaborations cutting across various industries and have acquired substantial experience. We are committed to continue this journey to cater to our customers’ unique needs and offer them personalized solutions, especially in the realm of interiors and furniture.

3DN: Any last words for our readers?

We would like to draw attention to the importance of making conscious purchasing decisions. It is advisable to find out about the products before buying and to pay attention to the company behind them. This is the only way to ensure that you only buy products that correspond to your own values. You can find more information on the Recozy website HERE.
